On the back of achieving near footballing immortality last season, it’s safe to say that the 2022/23 campaign has so far flattered to deceive for Liverpool.

However, despite an opening night humbling at the hands of a high-flying Napoli, the Reds did ensure their safe passage through from Group A with what was ultimately a comfortable night’s work in Amsterdam.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges rode their luck at times against fellow European superpowers Ajax, but, spurred on by a legion of adoring fans, all of whom have been praised for their behaviour in the aftermath of the game, Liverpool took control of proceedings and ultimately, made light work of what appeared to be a tricky situation.

In truth, much of the hard work towards qualification had been done in the doubler header with Rangers. Despatching of their visitors from north of the border at Anfield before running riot at Ibrox to all but guarantee a spot in the final 16 of Europe’s elite competition.

Despite a host of seemingly lacklustre showings, quietly Mohamed Salah has acquired six goals and is level with Kylian Mbappe when it comes to top goal scorers, thus proving his undeniable excellence once again.

Albeit much has been made of an undoubtedly stuttering start to the season, both in Europe and domestically, Klopp’s side still possesses enough quality, class and perhaps most crucially, experience to challenge for the Champions League title this term.

Favourable draws can so often prove to be pivotal in the latter stages and as the Reds continue to find their feet, lady luck may still have a part to play for now. But, rest assured, such is the affinity that Liverpool Football Club has with this trophy, any glimmer of hope will be greeted with open arms.

Whilst many may look again to Real Madrid or even serial favourites Manchester City, write this Liverpool side off at your peril, particularly with a final in a certain Istanbul.
