Champions Journalist fan reporter Valeria Paz reflects on her side’s incredible turnaround at Anfield last night

After a tough World Cup for Real Madrid’s players and a less than ideal return to La Liga, it is good to be back home: back in the Champions League.

Jürgen Klopp’s team came onto the field with an avenging spirit, scoring two goals in less than 15 minutes, which is not an everyday story. They were furious and not afraid to show it. And how could they not be? With all the burden of past seasons, they were ready to face their biggest rival in the Champions League in recent years. Unfortunately for the English team that spirit wasn’t enough, as Vinícius danced at Anfield.

Real Madrid fans feel at home in the Champions League

Despite Liverpool's strong start, Vini Jr came to the rescue and woke up our opponent’s fans from the short dream they were having. Even though it wasn’t Thibaut Courtois’ best day, nor Allison’s, this game was one that football fans will remember for years to come. Real Madrid’s star player completed his job with a doublet, while Éder Militão rectified his earlier mistake by scoring as well. However, the highlight of the night was watching captain Karim mark his territory surrounded by Kopites.

Liverpool is never an easy rival, rather the opposite, and it was even more concerning when we knew that our team wasn’t having the best time domestically. However, this victory was a testament to their resilience and fighting spirit. It was a hard-fought battle but, in the end, the Madridistas emerged victorious. The Champions League is where they truly shine and this match was a perfect example of that. Here’s hoping that they can continue their winning streak and bring the trophy home once again.

It really is mind-blowing how, based on the first 15 minutes, everyone was 100 percent sure that Klopp’s team had it all under control, but then came another Real comeback. That's the beauty of football: sometimes it doesn't make sense, so don’t bother trying to understand it.

Valeria first remembers cheering for Real Madrid as an eight-year-old and was soon sharing her dad’s passion for the club. Her top player is Iker Casillas, who she says, “was, is and will always be my favourite athlete. He taught me that success is not only about effort, but also about patience, passion and about staying true to yourself and your instincts. He’s a living legend.” So far, nothing tops Real Madrid’s 2014 Champions League win against Atlético. “I couldn’t hold back my tears when Ramos scored that 90th minute goal,” she says. “Celebrating with my best friends was unforgettable.”
